Fenceline Cider Receives Three Awards at the 2021 New York International Cider Competition

Fenceline Cider kicks off 2021 by coming home with three new awards from this year’s virtual New York International Cider Competition (NYICC): with Windfall receiving a Silver Award in the Wood-Aged Category and Understory Elderberry winning the Bronze Award in the Fruit Cider Category. Fenceline Cider was also named Colorado Cider Producer of the Year at the event.

Fenceline’s Windfall Cider is a French-style cider, born from a blend of French Bittersweet apples. The Windfall fruit blend is sourced from Shawn Carney’s Atomic Orchard in Cedaredge, CO. The juice is fermented slowly and finished in French oak casks. Windfall is packaged in 750ml bottles.

Fenceline’s Understory Elderberry Cider, released in July of 2020, is a bittersweet union of two old world flora — elderberry and apples. The rich mouthfeel and thick tannin of the Elderberry is a perfect compliment to the sweetness and bright acidity of the heirloom apples. Understory is packaged in 12oz can 4 packs.

“We’re thrilled to be honored with these three awards from NYICC,” says Sam Perry, Fenceline co-founder. “One of my absolute favorites, our Windfall is a great example of a proper mountain-west cider. The higher tannins and acid, produced by fruit grown at this altitude and dry climate can create some remarkable flavors. It is the exact style of cider that got me excited about planting an orchard and working with apples. And our new Understory cider is truly unique, with a bold purple hue. Elderberries have been known for centuries as a folk remedy with perceived antiviral properties, which I think makes it the perfect cider for this summer.”

The NYICC is open to commercial cider producers from around the world. What sets The NYICC apart from other international beverage competitions is their Trade Only blind judging panel with retail store buyers, restaurant beverage directors, hoteliers as judges.

About Fenceline

Rooted along the upper tributaries of the Colorado River, Fenceline Cider was founded with a curiosity and admiration for wild and historic apples. Reviving the region’s cider traditions, Fenceline is crafted with cold, slow fermentation — producing a drier libation, with complex flavors, and less sugar. Surrounded by thousands of abandoned orchards that continue to grow in Montezuma County’s rich soil and arid climate, we are committed to upcycling the region’s heritage apples and wild, one-of-a-kind varietals into extraordinary craft cider. fencelinecider.co
