Live Music: Afrobeatniks

Live Music: Afrobeatniks

The Afrobeatniks draw their inspiration from the source: the popular, folkloric and spiritual music of Africa. The ancient rhythms that have traveled through time and space have now morphed into the grooves and melodies these Afrobeatniks provide, through their mutual passion for the complex and dance inducing West African, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Latin Jazz music. Nigerian Afro-pop in the style of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, fused with traditional folkloric rhythm-structures of Guinea, West Africa, often serves as the vehicle to launch both original tunes and spirited covers. A bit of funk, reggae, and rock and roll round out the experience. A revolving cast of talented musicians fill out their sound during live shows.

Live Music: Robert Webster

Live Music: Robert Webster

It begins with the bass: three notes, two tones leading into the tonic, the root note repeated in quarter beats, through one measure, into two before returning to the eighth-note intro. Once more the quarter notes beat a pulse, constant, steady, and in whatever bars in whatever towns flung like flies across America’s breadbasket, high heeled feet have found their throbbing ground, penny loafers, sneakers, rubber-soled tennis shoes or boots of Spanish leather are polishing the pine-streaked floor and the glass in whatever window, however fogged, quivers like a case containing a heart too large for its fragile canister. Drum sticks flicker mid-air momentarily and, in a whirl, thump a pad, every downbeat accentuated with one peremptory pump, and a tonal network spirals around the first heartbeat pulse: musical vibrations quivering like nerves so palpable you can almost feel their ecstatic fabric. And finally, a strummed acoustic guitar thrums through the room, and you might, only might, now realize all of it - drums, guitar and bass - is presently performed before you by one man. All this, before the soar of a searing vocal starts. And what a vocal. A leonine roar slashed through with all the scars of a blues singer while sweetened with the melodic sensibility of only our best pop crooners. But it doesn’t matter now. No one can hear it. They’ve checked out. They’re all body and soul, dancing there in the arms of whatever partner they’re lucky enough to share this experience with, this moment of such beauty and sensuality you can touch it, smell it, breathe it. And this moment is the music of Robert Webster.

Live Music: One Roof Blues

What began as a husband and wife duo with Dave (guitar) and Taylor LaRocco (vocals), quickly expanded to include Randy Hayes (harmonica), rounding out the talented One Roof Blues trio. One Roof Blues’ homegrown sound blends the sultry tone of Taylor’s vocals seamlessly with Dave’s bottleneck slide guitar and the searing presence of Randy’s harmonica. Playing soul and blues-inspired originals and a variety of covers in venues across Southwestern Colorado, the group also earned a spot in the Telluride Blues Challenge at the Brews and Blues Festival and have played on the Blues Trains multiple times as a crowd favorite.

Live Music: Erik & Friends Series : ft. Hap Purcell

The winter edition of Erik & Friends brings Hap Purcell to play banjo. I've played with Hap as part of Lawn Chair Kings for many years, but we've never played in a duo format. Hap has played with many Durango bands, including Outta Hand Stringband, Rock and Rye, Deep Blue Creek, Lonesome Stew, Sourmash, and Bear Hand Killers. During a stint in North Carolina, he was part of The Frogtown Five. Hap has played electric guitar and banjo in both Jack Ten High and Lawn Chair Kings. He joined Robin Davis as part of The RD Unit, and Hap has recently been sitting in with various bluegrass bands such as Fellowship of the Strings and Smelter Mountain Boys. Hap Purcell is beloved by many in the area as a tasteful banjo player and a friend. Thanks for your support of local musicians!
Cheers, Erik Nordstrom

Live Music: People We Know

Live Music: People We Know

An aggregation of acoustic musicians from the hills of southwest Colorado. Over multiple moons People We Know has coalesced into a solid group of enthusiastic, almost exclusively in-time mountain-grass pickers. Born amidst late night festival levity, they explore the limits of bluegrass, rock and roll, and latin covers while taking a creative and fun approach to original compositions.

With Alex "The Closer” Forsthoff on guitar, Jeff "Birdman" Berman on bass fiddle, Aaron "Dighon" Cooklin on mandolin, Craig "F-baum" Feigenbaum on the banjo, and Mark "Marky-Mark" Walser on fiddle, People You Know will take you on a musical ride to all ends of the mountain-grass spectrum. Their highly anticipated shows throughout the San Juan mountains range from up-tempo, foot stomping, hollerin' bluegrass to leisurely ballads, with tunes both real and fake. You decide.

Live Music: You Knew Me When

Join us at the Tap Room For You Knew Me When

“The band’s lush sound belies its limited membership…it’s the percussive elements and rhythmic nuances that set “We Found Roads” apart from typical folk fare…YKMW’s music spills over with catchy melodies, beautiful harmonies and pillowy acoustic guitar, as well-crafted folk music often does. But Karisa and Cie also use rhythm to imbue their songs with a strong sense of momentum…The album is a reflection of mile-markers and moments derived from giving up everything and finding new paths together,” says the bio. And on “We Found Roads,” you kind of feel like you’re along for the ride.” – Bend Bulletin, BEND, OR

Live Music: Snake and the Rabbit

Snake and the Rabbit is the lovechild of husband and wife, Brett and Leanna Patterson. The two songwriters have been writing and playing together since 2010. In November of 2018 the duo decided to cut the dead weight and perform strictly as a two-piece from here on out. The result is Snake and the Rabbit: a stripped down, minimalist approach to Americana music heavily influenced by Psychedelic folk, American blues, Outlaw Country and lo-fi Garage Rock.
